This entire island is a national park with over 75 species of birds and a rich history. Maria Island is one of the best places in Tasmania for observing birds, and the east coast marine habitat is one of the most intensively studied areas in Australia. The island's cliffs are also popular and are frequently visited on walking tours. The Painted Cliffs are sandstone with patterns formed by iron oxide, and the Fossil Cliffs are limestone with embedded fossils from ancient seas.
