Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes located entirely within the United States. It is the largest lake in the United States, and its surface area of 22,300 square miles makes it slightly larger than Croatia. Lake Michigan's beaches, with their soft, off-white sand and clear waters, are some of the most beautiful in the United States. Because of these beaches, the region is known by some as the "Third Coast". The shores of Lake Michigan are home to several state parks, large cities like Chicago and Milwaukee, as well as smaller tourist towns. Islands which attract tourists include Washington Island, Mackinac Island and Beaver Island.
